Teenage Pregnancy is a menace that is eating deep into the
present and future lives of the 21st century modern girls. More disturbing is
the report by the National Population Commission that the occurrence of teenage
pregnancy in the country might increase to over 60million by the end of 2015.
Presently, research shows that about 16million girls between the ages of 15-19
are pregnant, a situation more than 80% of them innocently or ignorantly found
themselves; a situation majority of them are not prepared for. In Nigeria,
statistics has it that one out of every three teenage girls in the North is
pregnant while in the South, the rate is one in ten teenage girls.
This situation according to many literatures on the Nigerian
context has been attributed to Poverty, Sexual Abuse, Ignorance, Cultural and
Religious Beliefs amongst others; which brings with it health, social and
economic implications. Medical experts affirmed that early pregnancy is the
greatest killer of teenage girls worldwide; with its attendant problems like
Unsafe Abortion, Pregnancy Complications, Curtailment of Education and Unstable
Marital Life.
The challenge of ending teenage pregnancy has been laid at
the doorstep of emerging leaders especially the teenage girls and young female
adults to find ways of avoiding this danger, through propagating right
information, campaigning against exploitation and raising a movement for educating the girl-child.
Against this background, my friends and i decided not to
place the responsibility of fighting this menace facing our younger ones solely
in the hands of the government; hence, the Project BUY A BOOK; SAVE A LIFE.
This project aims at drawing the attention of teenagers to the need to
understand the very contemporary issues of adolescent sexuality.
We hope to achieve this by providing a medium which contains
all the basic information needed to equip an average teenager on the
implications of youthful exuberance, teenage pregnancy and to avoid it. The
medium however is the Novel: Yetunde Lawal's "SECRETS". This book has
been approved and recommended in the Lagos State list of books for Secondary
School, and it focuses on teenagers and the problems of unwanted pregnancy.
The story is carefully woven into a beautiful prose which is
not only interesting to read but also very easy to understand. With this
project, you and i will buy One Thousand Copies of this book and freely donate
to One Thousand Students across Oyo State, Nigeria starting with Ibadan. All
you have to do is BUY A BOOK for Five Hundred Naira (N500:00) and you just
might have SAVED A LIFE. I urge you all to be a part of this project as we take
a walk towards making tomorrow beautiful.
"one who wants to change the world MUST start with his
immediate environment"
Thank You.
