A boy who was born with 12 fingers and 12
toes has left his parents and doctors confused, Leeds, West Yorkshire,
England, UK.
Jacob Duffy was supposed to be perfectly healthy
but afther his birth seven months ago it was clear – he is an unusual
child. Jacob has extra toes and fingers, with some of them
having three phalanges instead of two. He also had a number of other birth
defects, including a hole in his heart and serious eye problems,
besides, he has an allergy to dairy products, and difficulty swallowing.
Recalling the day Jacob was born his
mother Rachael Hendry said: “We were shocked when he was born
and saw his little finger – at first we just thought that he had broken
it. My pregnancy was completely normal then we counted the digits and that
was the first time we noticed something was wrong. We joked around a bit
at first and said that at least he will be good on the piano – but obviously we
quickly realised that things were a bit more serious.
Doctors don’t want to remove his extra digits until he is
12 months old because they don’t want to put him under anaesthetic – even
though one toe is really loose and could affect his walking. I quite like
the extra fingers and I don’t really want the surgeons to chop them off but
kids are quite cruel and I could hardly send him to school with them. He’s
doing really well now and the focus is on how he develops like any other
baby. He has so many defects that it can’t just be coincidence.”
As Jacob’s medical condition remains
undiagnosed, his doctors and parents are waiting on the results of
the medical tests, According to Ms Hendry and Mr Duffy, despite
a series of surgeries the brave baby boy is doing well, he got used
to various medical procedures and is playful and cheerful child. His
parents are now raising money for his treatment by any means, trying to
give their baby a normal life.
